I live in the US and receive StarChoice using a 30 inch dish in Northern
Ohio. The satellite switching is done using a 22 Khz tone. My question is:
are the French channel frequencies (and other channels) not utilized on the
main satellite? If there is info on the same frequencies on the main sat,
there would be interference. This is unless the older (French) sat is
circularly polarized and the main horizontal or vertical. Also, I have been
told that that StarChoice system differs is some fundamental way from the
transmission method used for DBS. Starchoice is a medium power system and
uses horizontal and vertical polarization but what other fundamental
differences exist? Thanks.

SC uses Ku band satellites, DirecTV uses DBS, Expressvu uses DBS, Dish
uses some DBS and some Ku.

SC uses F1 @107.3 and F2 @ 111.1 F2 has HD, French and ethnic
programming + some PPV + NFL Sunday ticket.

You are presently aimed at F1. If you wish to get programming from F2;
you have 2 choices:
1) replace your dish with a SC elliptical (60 or 75cm will work at your
location)
2) or purchase a second ku dish, point at 111.1 You need to run the
outputs from each dish to a DirecTV 2X2 or 2X4 multiswitch.

I have the elliptical dish and receive both Anik birds now.
I was just wondering what is the difference between the transmission methods
for Star Choice and the others-- why isn't SC considered DBS--because it is
medium power? I was also wondering about the method of switching the
downconverter from E1 to E2. It is uses the 22 KHz tone but are the antennas
and frequencies the same? thanks
